How Does Food Production Affects the Environment?

In the same way that the environment affects food production, the process of food production will affect the environment. The method of farming used will determine how deep the effect will be. Here are some of the ways that food production affects the environment:

Soil erosion: when the soil is continuously cultivated, it will become loose. This will make is susceptible to erosion when the rain comes. The effect of the erosion will lead to reduced food production as the fertile soil will be carried away.
Drought: the excessive cutting of trees will lead to changes in climatic patterns. The amount of rainfall will be reduced and if this continues, it will lead to draught.

Wasteful irrigation: At times, there is a wasteful use of water for irrigation. Some of the farmers will leave water to overflow even when the crops have already had enough.

Deforestation: most of the lands that are being used for food production were previously occupied by forests. Today, the forests have been cleared which has had a negative impact on the environment. It will also lead to loss of habitation for the wild animals that used to live there.

Greenhouse gas emissions: when the carbon dioxide and other chemicals are emitted by greenhouses into the atmosphere, it leads to adverse climatic changes.

Pollutants emission: A lot of chemical substances will be used in food products which will find their way into the environment. When the rain comes, the chemicals will be washed into the rivers and oceans. The aquatic life will be negatively affected and some of the animals may die.
